Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Stewardship Workshop / 2-26-25
Please join CU Maurice River for its first Stewardship Workshop of 2025 on Wednesday, February 26. Attendees will partner with staff from NJDEP to remove invasive Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) within Peaslee Wildlife Management Area in Vineland using hand tools. You'll learn the techniques and best management practices for removal of woody invasives and how to eliminate them over time from your property.
Japanese barberry was first introduced to the US in 1875 as an ornamental and has escaped cultivation. It can form dense stands that compete with native trees and herbaceous plants and can alter soil properties. Studies have shown that Japanese barberry stands harbor black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) that spread Lyme disease, and that removing barberry reduces the number of these arachnids. Japanese barberry spreads readily through seed and by its large, shallow root system, with rhizomes that can produce new shoots. Birds such as wild turkey disperse seeds by feeding on fruit pulp and discarding the seeds, or ingesting the entire fruit and leaving the seeds in their droppings.
This workshop well help reduce the threat of this invasive species to the local environment and, possibly, to human health through the reduction of tick habitat.Date and Time
